Lilacs make me happy. I remember as a child, laying on my mom's bed on Saunday afternoons with the window open and smelling the lilacs as the breeze was blowing the flowery aroma all through our house. Those were the good ol' days filled with nothing but meeting at the trees and peanut butter jelly sandwiches cut in 4 triangles. Ok, so the peanut butter sandwiches cut in 4 triangles thing still exists today, but everything else seems so complicated as of late. I just don't know what I'm going to do with myself!
Jenni's visit today made me happy. It was so good to see her. I can't believe she's going to be 21 in about a week!!! I hope I can see her sometime during her birthday week at least...we will see.
Picking a new pope makes me happy. I've never had any type of experience with this yet. I remember as a child learning about the black smoke dealy, but in a way it's cool to get to see it and read about it in the news. We talked to Fr. Dawson (cutest little old man you've ever seen!) about it tonight and there's quite a controversy surrounding it! Word (of the Lord).
peace out.

Dear God, Thank you for Moms!
What would mornings be like without your mom? Who would be there to wake you up, make you breakfast, and smother you with kisses? The world functions better because of the love and compassion of mommies. God has blessed us with mothers and fathers. He tells us to obey and respect our parents. The next time Mom tells you to pick up your toys, or fold the towels, or eat your vegetables, make sure you obey. Your mother knows what's best for you. Think of it this way, by obeying your mom, you are obeying God!
Honor thy father and mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Exodus 20:12

I spent the past week or so in David, Kentucky, an old coal mining town in Appalachia. We did some work at an alternative high school in the area and overall it was a freakin awesome experience. We got there on Saturday night and the following Sunday the weather was gorgeous! After mass, we went to a local state park and frolicked in the woods, hiking through the mountains and such. On Monday, I got to shadow a student through his day at school. It was really fascinating talking to these students, hearing their stories and realizing how different their lives are from mine. I asked my shadow students what they do for fun and he said, "go out and shoot things." And I swear it sounded like something straight from the Blue Collar Comedy Tour when he kept saying, "Burnin' it up!" The students who go to school here are mostly low-income, come from rough family lives, and didn't make it in public schools. This is basically their last chance to make it through school and get a diploma...and they love it. It is amazing the environment that has been built at this school and no words I write could ever do it justice. The next couple of days were spent doing odd jobs: collecting rocks, picking up trash, cleaning cabinets, organizing, packing away clothes, etc. But, the Kentucky flu caught up with us. Sara got sick on Tuesday night and then on Wednesday she decided to share it with me. Needless to say, that pretty much put me out for the rest of the trip and all I wanted was my mommy. Randomly enough, on our way home, we stopped for dinner in Peoria and so Trish and Pops came to see me. Overall, it was an amazing trip and being there just once makes me wanna go there again.

today i ventured to the library to search for an author/illustrator for my children's lit class. so, of course i ask the old, balding reference librarian (bless his heart) and we could find nothing. the conversation goes as follows:
James O'Gorman: well, I'll look a while longer and if I find anything, I'll email you Amy: oh, you don't hafta do that. im sure you've got other more important things to do JO: well, not really I just kind of sit here all day. Actually, have you seen the movie Napoleon Dynamite? me: yes JO: well, I've been trying to research a liger. me: omg! a liger? are you serious? JO: yea, and I think they might actually exist (goes on to show me several articles from newspapers about ligers) me: wow, who knew? (laughing like crazy, completely inappropriate behavior for a library might i add) were you making a bet about the existence of a liger or something? (joking, of course. he's a reference librarian for pete's sake!) JO: actually, yes. it started as a bet and now im really interested.
so, in conclusion, if anybody ever wonders what a reference librarian does in her or his free time, just ask because it will probably make you laugh.

Kevin thought Shanghai was in Connecticut!!! What a silly head. I think I laughed about that one for about an hour. And then I called him to laugh in his face and i woke him up (sorry!).
But, seriously...I'm going somewhere over spring break. That is final. The destination however, is not final. I've got two great ideas as of now. 1. go to England. I've always freakin wanted to and who knows? Prince William may be available. or 2. California-for one purpose only~to be on The Price Is Right. This is my life-long goal. I will go there and be on the show and kick major ass and win lots of good shit. But, I've gotta go soon because let's face it, Bob Barker doesn't have many good years left. And if it's the last thing that happens to him-I will give that old man a kiss.
But, I'm open to suggestions and looking for travel companions, so if anyone's interested, give me a shout out.

Best Thanksgiving break EVER. Flew to Dallas on Tuesday *all by myself* to see the pilot. I felt so awesome and independent. Dallas rocked my world. Tim has his own cute little apartment complete with "big screen" tv and private balcony! How cute! Did lots of family bonding and shopping, and turkey eating. Oh, and saw where JFK was assassinated. (A trip with my family must include a history lesson.) And, I swear, in Dallas there are so many airplanes in the sky that you could easily mistake them for stars. Awesome. Must travel more and soon.
Good times back home. Oh, Dianne. I mean...Christmas with the Kranks was so cute but I hate cats. Funniest time of the whole weekend...also noted in Jenni's lj, was when Jenni asked if I wanted more water as I was quite unsuccessfully filling up the bottle=water all over the floor and much laughing.

Kevin came to Ambrose for the weekend since its his fall break and my homecoming. We had lunch in the brand new University Center and afterwards, I took him on a little tour. As we were walking up the stairs to the third floor two things happened simultaneously: Kevin grabbed by butt and the president of the entire University walked by and saw us. I looked at him and said in a chipper tone, "Hi Dr. Rogalski" without skipping a beat, but afterwards could barely keep my composure. I sure hope he saw that...
What a great start to the weekend.

here i am back at ambrose. i think i can officially declare this summer as the shortest summer of my life. it seems like theres so much more i should have done, but just didnt do. im such a whore. oh well. its really exciting being back here. my parents helped move me in and my dad was the cutest in the entire world because he was so efficient with his dolly and power tools. dude, my dad is invincible. and my mom was so cute because she didnt know what to do, so she just kinda sat there and when she did try to place stuff in my room, i would just end up moving it. its so weird being in a big huge building practically alone, but at the same time its really exciting. i got to go through all the rooms and check them out. they seem really big compared to mine. i know, duh amy-yours is a single and theirs is a double, but really! and it all just plain smells new, like new car smell only its a dorm. i still have a whole heck of a lot of unpacking to do and im really excited/nervous about training next week. leaving loved ones is never good, but theres something really calming about being back at ambrose.

i tried to close my closet door tonite and it wouldnt shut. a box had fallen off of one of the shelves and the contents had spilled all over the floor. i picked up all the contents of the box and as i did, i couldn't help but look through them all again. you see, i have trouble throwing things like cards and notes away. i dont know why, i just do. so this entire box was filled with messages people had written to me during high school. and there were some pretty kick-ass things in there. it sorta made me realize how special and down right freakin amazing my friends are. so here are some awesome things found in the box of wonder.
-the internet conversation that made me realize that i wanted to be more than friends with kevin. -a note from sammy jo to cheer me up after the worst week of my life (the week when my aunt died and kevin left for school the first time) -a note from jenni telling me how proud she was of me and how happy she was that i got to play volleyball since she didnt...made me cry -several notes from susan complete with envelopes with either amy or mom written all over the outside -mother's day cards and cards that say happy birthday to my mom -a photocopy of the dog puppet from the madrigal dinner and a wheaties box compliments of laura "its all your fault" cross. (happy birthday btw!) -the last birthday card i recieved from my aunt lori -the note kevin gave me the day after his last day of high school, after the something corporate concert. hehe. -the note tina gave me at band camp our senior year when we got to be captains together -a card from mrs whitfield and jenni on my 18th birthday trying to cheer me up because...yano -an "orange crush" from kevin from before we were dating that said "i like orange soda, but you dont like soda. eveyone deserves orange soda" -several cards complete with newspaper clippings with my name in them from my kindergarten teacher (who also happens to be a good friend of my mom) - a note from caitlin expressing her frustration with tim and telling me how lucky i am to have a boyfriend who appreciates me -ridiculous "get well" birthday cards from jaci make me laugh so hard i pee my pants -a 'have a nice day' card from duncan -the script of "encores" -a few too many cards with butts on the front of them
and many many more...
so in conclusion to this reminiscent entry, i'd just like to say thank you to all my friends from all times of my life because you are all so very special to me. every single one of you have left an imprint on my heart and i love you all so very much.
